Mario Hezonja has taken the first major step toward a possible return to the NBA, but his future remains far from settled.
The Croatian forward has officially activated the NBA release clause in his contract with Real Madrid, allowing him to pursue opportunities across the Atlantic. However, activating the clause does not guarantee that he will be playing in the NBA next season.
The buyout, reportedly worth around €850,000, can be paid by the player himself rather than an NBA franchise. By doing so, Hezonja has given himself the freedom to negotiate without being tied to Real Madrid.
Despite attracting interest, the 30-year-old has not yet received an NBA offer that meets his expectations in terms of role, financial package, and long-term security.
That uncertainty leaves the door wide open for a potential return to Europe.
Should Hezonja only receive a non-guaranteed contract or a short-term NBA opportunity, he could become a free agent again in a matter of weeks, reopening the possibility of signing with a EuroLeague club during the season.
As a result, several top European teams are expected to monitor his situation closely, knowing that one of the continent’s premier forwards could unexpectedly become available if his NBA plans do not materialize.
For now, Hezonja has opened the door to the NBA—but he has yet to walk through it. His next move will depend on whether the right opportunity emerges in the coming days, making his future one of the biggest storylines of the European basketball offseason.
