Tornike Shengelia is reportedly on the verge of leaving Barcelona, with the Georgian forward prepared to pay his own €900,000 release clause in order to secure a move to another EuroLeague powerhouse.
According to Mozzart Sport, Shengelia is determined to join one of the clubs seriously competing for the EuroLeague title, which remains the biggest missing achievement of his distinguished career.
Despite successful spells with CSKA Moscow, Baskonia, Virtus Bologna, and now Barcelona, the 34-year-old has yet to lift Europe’s most prestigious club trophy.
Although Shengelia is still under contract with Barcelona for two more seasons, the club’s ongoing restructuring has reportedly influenced his decision to seek a new challenge.
The report points to a series of major departures from the Catalan club, including Xavi Pascual, Will Clyburn, Tomáš Satoranský, Nicolás Laprovíttola, Youssoupha Fall, and Willy Hernangómez, as well as the collapse of the proposed signings of Mike James and Moses Wright—the latter eventually joining EA7 Emporio Armani Milan, which reportedly paid €900,000 to Barcelona to complete the transfer.
With Barcelona undergoing significant changes, Shengelia is said to have decided that the time has come to turn the page and continue his career elsewhere.
Several EuroLeague clubs are believed to be monitoring the situation closely, although no specific destinations have been confirmed at this stage.
