Panathinaikos Complete Blockbuster Deal For Sylvain Francisco After €1M Agreement With ASVEL

The Greens secured their top target for the point guard position, with Sylvain Francisco joining Panathinaikos after a decisive move to complete Zeljko Obradovic’s roster plan.

Panathinaikos have completed one of the biggest moves of the summer transfer window, signing Sylvain Francisco from ASVEL and adding a high-level EuroLeague guard to their roster.

The Greek giants moved decisively in recent days to complete a deal that initially appeared extremely difficult. After weeks of negotiations with the French club, Panathinaikos found the breakthrough and secured the player who was their top priority for the point guard position.

The situation at ASVEL played a key role in the negotiations, with financial uncertainty surrounding the French club creating doubts about their ability to keep some of their top players.

Panathinaikos took advantage of the opportunity and submitted a €1 million offer to ASVEL for Francisco’s release. After several days of discussions, the French side accepted the proposal and allowed the move to happen.

Obradovic’s Preferred Choice For The Point Guard Role

Sylvain Francisco was the first-choice option for Zeljko Obradovic to strengthen the point guard position.

The Serbian coach believes Francisco fits perfectly into the team’s new philosophy, bringing speed, creativity, scoring ability and experience from the highest level of European basketball.

His ability to create off the dribble, attack defenses and make plays under pressure makes him the type of guard Panathinaikos were looking for.

The French Connection Helped The Deal

Francisco was also attracted by the growing French presence inside the Panathinaikos locker room.

Mathias Lessort, Guerschon Yabusele and Moustapha Fall reportedly played an important role in convincing the French guard that Athens was the right destination for the next chapter of his career.

The opportunity to compete for EuroLeague titles with one of the strongest rosters in Europe was a major factor in his decision.

Francisco Accepted A Different Contract To Join Panathinaikos

The French guard had previously agreed to a very lucrative contract with ASVEL, but Panathinaikos were not willing to break their financial structure.

Francisco accepted different terms because he wanted to join Panathinaikos and compete at the highest level.

The player’s priority was clear: joining a championship contender and having the chance to fight for EuroLeague glory.

The Toliopoulos Move Helped Fund The Transfer

Panathinaikos’ strategy throughout the summer also played a major role in completing the deal.

The Greens generated important funds from the transfer of Vassilis Toliopoulos to Aris, with that money helping finance the agreement with ASVEL.

At the same time, the salary budget for Francisco became available following Cedi Osman’s departure, allowing Panathinaikos to strengthen the roster without disrupting their financial balance.

With Sylvain Francisco now added, Panathinaikos complete one of the strongest squads in recent years and send another powerful message ahead of the new EuroLeague season.
